Aging Gracefully

Aging Gracefully

Life unfolds day by day with the moments we treasure whether they are ordinary or extra-ordinary. Chatting heart to heart with hubby and kids, having lunch together, holding hands, or short encounters with beautiful souls have become the best part of my days.  The older I get, the more I realize and cherish that. Yet, I ponder about the meaning of life - what my real calling in this life is.

As years go by, I grow more in the knowledge of myself and others. Physically diminishing but spiritually solidifying. Yes, something grow in me!

My eyes have begun to sag, my hair is thinning, my face is getting more wrinkly, my memory isn’t as sharp as it used to be, and I need reading glasses most of the time. Yes, I am getting older. Yikes. Time passes so quickly, and I wonder where the years have gone. It takes courage to face the brevity of life. No one has a clue when the last day will be. So, the present moment is all we have.

A common saying is “aging gracefully”, but what does it mean? How do we do that? Is it just some cliché saying?

Father, grant me awareness if I lack gratitude. Thank you for everything, not only for all the joyful events, but also for the sadness, failure, dryness and dark clouds. They have made me wait patiently for You, to feel Your love and to discover Your presence.

A friend asked me “what’s your new year’s resolution?” Maybe aging gracefully can be my resolution this year, Lord? You and I have to work together. Don’t lead me to age “disgracefully” to become bitter, frustrated, or full of self-pity, and to let those close to us feel guilty for not doing enough for me.

Aging gracefully is for me to always feel Your Presence and not to let the physical appearance stained the inner beauty. Aging gracefully is my gratitude to Him for what He has given to me. It is the joy in me today, tomorrow and until I meet Him in Eternity.
